What is Evidence-Based Treatment?

Evidence-Based Treatments and Cognitive Behavior therapy (CBT)

Evidence-based treatments (EBTs) are treatments that have been developed out of the science base and have been found to be effective in multiple research studies.  Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is often referred to as the "gold-standard" treatment for many mental health conditions including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression meaning it is the one of the most evidence-based treatment for these disorders. In CBT, we examine the interaction of your thoughts (cognition), actions (behaviors), and feelings (emotions and sensations) to learn more about your experience and what may be maintaining your problems. CBT can utilize various components including:

  • exposure

  • cognitive interventions (cognitive restructuring and reappraisal)

  • mindfulness

  • acceptance-based strategies

  • and reducing avoidance and safety behaviors.
